How the NDIS Works
Understanding the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a landmark program in Australia that provides support to individuals with disabilities, their families, and caregivers. At Southern Hand Support Services, we aim to help you navigate the NDIS, ensuring you receive the support you need to achieve your goals and improve your quality of life. Here’s an overview of how the NDIS works:
What is the NDIS?
The NDIS is an Australian Government initiative designed to provide support for people with permanent and significant disabilities. The scheme aims to offer individualized support based on each participant’s unique needs and goals, empowering them to live more independently and participate fully in their communities.
Key Features of the NDIS
Individualized Plans
Each NDIS participant receives a personalized plan tailored to their specific needs, goals, and aspirations. This plan outlines the supports and services the participant will receive.
Participant Choice and Control
The NDIS emphasizes participant choice and control, allowing individuals to choose the providers and services that best meet their needs and preferences.
Funding for Supports
The NDIS provides funding for a range of supports and services, including daily personal activities, transport, therapeutic supports, workplace help, and more.

Focus on Goals and Outcomes

The NDIS is goal-oriented, helping participants achieve their personal, social, and economic goals through targeted supports and services.

How Does the NDIS Work?

Eligibility and Access
o access the NDIS, individuals must meet certain eligibility criteria, including age, residency, and disability requirements. Potential participants can check their eligibility on the NDIS website or contact the NDIS directly.

Applying for the NDIS

Eligible individuals can apply for the NDIS by completing an access request form. This involves providing information about their disability and how it impacts their daily life.

Planning Meeting

Once accepted into the NDIS, participants will have a planning meeting with an NDIS planner or Local Area Coordinator (LAC). During this meeting, participants discuss their goals, needs, and the supports they require.
Developing the NDIS Plan

Based on the planning meeting, an individualized NDIS plan is developed. This plan includes the participant’s goals, the supports they will receive, and the funding allocated for these supports.
Implementing the Plan

Participants can then choose their service providers and start using their funded supports. They can manage their plan themselves, use a plan manager, or have the NDIA manage it on their behalf.
Reviewing the Plan

NDIS plans are reviewed regularly to ensure they continue to meet the participant’s needs and goals. Participants can request a review if their circumstances change.
